Molecular imaging of inflammation with PET in acute and ventilator-induced lung injury

چکیده
This review focuses on methods to image acute lung inflammation with Positron Emission Tomography (PET). Four approaches are discussed that differ for biologic function of the PET reporter probe, radiotracer employed, and specific aspect inflammatory response is targeted. 2-[ 18 F]fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose ([ F]FDG) an enzyme substrate whose uptake used measure metabolic activation cells during injury in noncancerous lung. H 2 15 O radiolabeled plasma proteins inert molecules same physical characteristics as their nonradioactive counterparts edema vascular permeability. Tagged or receptor inhibitors probe expression these targets induced by stimuli. Lastly, cell-specific tracers being developed differentiate cell types contribute response. Taken together, cast imaging a versatile quantitative tool vivo noninvasively ventilator-induced injury.

Time course changes of oxidative stress and inflammation in hyperoxia-induced acute lung injury in rats
Objective(s):Therapies with high levels of oxygen are commonly used in the management of critical care. However, prolonged exposure to hyperoxia can cause acute lung injury. Although oxidative stress and inflammation are purported to play an important role in the pathogenesis of acute lung injury, the exact mechanisms are still less known in the hyperoxic acute lung injury (HALI). Materials ...

Severe physical-trauma can lead to the development of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Currently, the only known treatment for ARDS is mechanical ventilation. However, if mechanical ventilation is applied inappropriately further injury and malfunction of the lungs may occur, and thus, causing a ventilator induced lung injury (VILI). VILI has several manifestations including volutraum...

The clinical relevance of experimental ventilator-induced lung injury has recently received a resounding illustration by the Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome Network trial that showed a 22% reduction of mortality in patients with acute respiratory disease syndrome when lung mechanical stress was lessened by tidal volume reduction during mechanical ventilation. This clinical confirmation of t...
